Under the distinguished patronage of the African Union and the Government of Ghana PANAFEST Foundation also Franko Travel and Tour wish to announce to all of it’s supporters and general public that the seventh edition of the Pan African Historical Theatre Festival – PANAFEST and Emancipation Day is scheduled to take place 27th July to 1st August 2009.
PANAFEST is primarily a cultural even dedicated to the enhancement of the ideals of Pan Africanism and development of the African continent. It is organized biennially of Africans and people of Africa descent as well as persons committed to the well being of Africans on the continent and in the Diaspora. The essential thrust if PANAFEST is to enhance development. This year’s event is special in that it is the 7th edition of the festival and will come on in the historical towns of Elmina, Cape Coast and Assin Manso. This year’s festival is under the general theme: “The Re-Emergence of African Civilization” with the festival theme being “Preserving the Uniting the African Family-Fight Against HIV/AIDS.
The African Family would seem to be bearing the brunt of the HIV/AIDS pandemic where-ever we find ourselves. It is however time to seek a clear understanding of just how the African Family has been affected in very concrete terms. More importantly, it is critical to take the bold step of looking within ourselves to assess the resources we have available to help us to overcome this scourge in our time. PANAFEST 2007 offers the platform for forthright communication among African peoples taking the form of intellectual dialogue, artistic manifestations and expositions of innovative solutions to the challenge posed by the AIDS pandemic.
There are so many dynamic events lined up for this year’s festival. There will be the Theatre performance, other performing Artists, Fine Arts Exhibit, African Market/EXPO, Official Opening Ceremony, Akwaaba (Welcome) Home Ceremony, Grand Durbar of Chiefs, Colloquium, Rites of Passage, Women’s Day, Reverential Night and Emancipation Day.
PERFORMANCES AND ART WORKS
Artist and artistes seeking to participate in PANAFEST 2007 are requested to provide a brief abstract of the works to be presented by January 2007 for consideration.
Participants are strongly encouraged to present works which
• Highlight important moments in the history of African people including their own societies
• Explore the issue of slavery and its consequences
• Celebrate and, where necessary, interrogate the knowledge systems and culture of African people
• Shed light on the effects of HIV/AIDS
• Envision the future of African people especially a future without AIDS
THE YOUTH DAY
The youth day at PANAFEST provides a unique opportunity for youth from different parts of the African World to get together and engage with the fundamental issue of being of African Descent in an extremely challenging global environment. While speakers are invited to address the major themes, this is a highly participatory forum and is organized by young people. Participants may offer to do brief performances relevant to the theme. PANAFEST 2007, in confronting HIV/AIDS offers young people the opportunity to invest in the future by discussing ways of negotiating a life without AIDS.
WOMEN’S DAY
The women of African World have gotten together very successfully since PANAFEST was initiated and PANAFEST 2007 offers no less an opportunity. Given that women and girls are affected by HIV/AIDS in particular ways, and have devised strategies for dealing with these effects, Women on this day will share experiences about the pandemic.
Participants may propose information and brief performance around this issue.
COLLOQUIUM
The colloquium has been a special of PANAFEST since its inception. It is the goal of the festival to public the proceedings. This year it is hoped that he colloquium will offer the opportunity for rigorous debate and the sharing of information on the state of the African Family particularly in the context of the HIV/AIDS scourge. Papers and panels may be proposed in the following areas. Proposals should be presented by January 2007.

As a premier cultural event on the African Continent endorsed by the (OAU) Organization of African Unity and its heir the (AU) African Union, it attracts people from all over the world. It is our expectation that thousands of participant made up of renowned performing and visual artist, political leaders, eminent personalities, investors, business concerns and tourist will attend PANAFEST 2007.
It is the desire of the PANAFEST Foundation, which is now an independent entity (formerly funded by government) responsible for organizing the festival to collaborate with the private sector as well as each and every available avenue of resource to help successfully host this enormous festival. Historic boat (canue) ride from Cape Coast / Dungeon Door of Return to Elmina Castle to be received by Traditional Leaders and Elders for a welcome home reception at the forecourt of the Elmina Castle.

This is a special packaged program for those brothers and sisters form Diaspora who wish to have their youth go through Ceremony as a rites of passage, naming ceremony and or Traditional marriage vows. This will be performed by special and pre arrangement request.
REVERENTIAL EVENING
This solemn ceremony in the evening of Emancipation Day begins with a candle light procession through the principal streets of Cape Coast to Cape Castle court yard which will feature an evening of commemorating our ancestors and end with a midnight Proclamation of Emancipation Day – 8:00 pm
1st August (Monday): EMANCIPATION DAY, AT ASSIN MANSO – 9:00 AM
The 8th Annual Celebration and climax of this years program will be held with a Durbar at Assin Manso marking the Official observance of Emancipation Day 2007
CLOSING CEREMONY AND AWARDS NIGHT
The official closing ceremony will be a dinner dance awards night held at the Centre for National Culture
NOTE:
The essential parts of the program have been contained within the period of the 26th beginning with the Akwaaba program in Elmina to the 1st August ending with the Emancipation Day Close-out/Awards Night which in total is a 7 day program. However for those interested in a longer experience, the Cape Coast and Elmina townships will have activities on going from the 24th July to the 2nd August 2007so that local people and others can enjoy Carnival Day, additional workshops and forums on AIDS/HIV, Trade Fair and other sites in the Central Region
